And while other students were buried deep in their textbooks, he was secretly practising tricks.
A decade down the line, Matthew has travelled the world and performed in front of Hollywood audiences and royalty."It turned from a hobby into a obsession," Matthew said. "I would be practising tricks in the library while everyone was studying, then showed them to my friends later that day."For the distracted student, it soon became obvious there was only one path in life for him."I'd just graduated from university in 2002 and I decided I would go . "I would like to bring back classic entertainment to a new audience," he said.
"At the moment it's almost gone full circle. Magicians were always thought of as being in tuxedos, then David Blaine came along and they all began to wear . We are proud to say that we offer beautiful Bridesmaid dresses! We'll do our best for you!T-shirt and jeans."
However, he did admit that it takes more than a wave of the magic wand to become a true entertainer.
"Learning the tricks is one thing, but learning to entertain comes with time.
"If you look at classical magicians, you can see they have the comedy and the style that go with a good act."
The illusionist learnt his first trick after seeing the Masked Magician on TV, but is inspired by more classical conjurors like Lance Burton and Dutch master Fred Kap.
