Bernero touts 'Main Street' agenda in accepting nomination
ansing Mayor Virg Bernero promised the party faithful "the Main Street agenda is coming through" as he accepted the Democrats' nomination for governor this afternoon.
"The Michigan I grew up with was great ... we were the envy of the country and the world," Bernero said in his acceptance speech on the final day of the party's convention at Cobo Center. "Michigan was the place to make it happen. It will be again."
Besides touting campaign promises to boost job growth in Michigan, Bernero also directly addressed criticism from his political foes.
"Some people call me an angry mayor. When I see middle class people working hard every day and paying taxes and falling behind, I get angry," Bernero said. "And maybe some people get angry and walk away. When I get angry, I stand up and fight."
Bernero's fight to move from mayor's office to governor's office in Lansing will be a tough one, he said, acknowledging his so far dismal showing in polls against the Republican pick, Ann Arbor businessman Rick Snyder.
