Blind beating victim thankful for outpouring of aid
A legally blind man who was beaten and robbed of his Social Security disability funds Tuesday was reimbursed this afternoon by community groups that were outraged over the incident.
Checks and cash for 50-year-old Daniel Perron also are funneling in at Mount Clemens City Hall as business owners work to boost a $500 reward for tips that lead to the arrest of the group of youngsters that robbed and beat Perron with his own cane.. "I can't believe it. There has been a wonderful response," Perron said. "I want to thank everybody that's been so supportive."
The Friends of Mount Clemens along with members of the Fraternal Order of Police, Central Macomb Lodge, gathered at the gazebo near Mount Clemens City Hall to give Perron $600. Vito Strolis, co-chairman of the friends group, said they all stepped up to help Perron after seeing media reports about the attack.
"I had to read the article three times about this man; it upset the heck out of me," he said. "I want this fellow to know ... there are good people here, and we will not tolerate this."
Perron was attacked by a group of young adults and teenagers around 6:30 p.m.. Perron said the perpetrators slammed his head into a wrought-iron fence on North River Road near the Gibraltar Trade Center. He was knocked to the ground,. Perron's father, George Perron, 83, said he was "taken aback by the deplorable act."
