Candidate seeks restart of recount in state rep race
A Democratic candidate for state representative who was narrowly defeated in the August primary is renewing her fight for a recount.
Mary Sheffield, who lost her bid for 4th District state representative by 73 votes to Maureen Stapleton, asked for a recount after the primary. The effort was halted after Stapleton objected, claiming the request was improperly filed.
Sheffield wants the Board of State Canvassers to restart the recount and will meet with the board at 10 a.m. Tuesday to make a formal request.

Christopher Trebilcock, Stapleton's attorney, said Sheffield violated election rules.
"State election law sets forth eight basic requirements a losing candidate must follow before the state will incur the costs of conducting a recount. Ms. Sheffield had 22 days after the election to learn those laws and follow them.. "We believe that the board should have an easy decision to make," Jackson said. "That requirement is not imposed upon candidates who are not incumbents. Incumbents who already hold the title of state representative are required to submit their petition with the house clerk."
Stapleton's request to have the recount halted also has frozen a recount request for 10th District candidates Stacy Pugh and David Stephen, who were respective first and second runners-up to Harvey Santana.
