Commissioner James Reading Makes Formal Apology to Citizen
During last week’s Dothan City Council Meeting, a Dothan Citizen by the name of Jeff Kelly was allowed privileges of the floor. In Mr. Kelly’s statements, he addressed the ongoing problem in the Wiregrass area, and around the country of illegal citizens holding American jobs. Kelly claimed that he had a friend that worked for a Dothan company, who lost his job because the company could hire illegal immigrants to do the work much cheaper. He questioned the Commission as to why there are no city policies enforcing federal laws regarding the hiring of illegal workers,. They may purchase their Prom Dresses from specialized shops, boutiques, or internet retailers. There are many specialty labels selling p and he simply asked that the situation be looked into. All of the Commissioners and the Mayor listened intently to Mr. Kelly’s statements, and some even expressed similar concerns. Except one. District 1 Commissioner James Reading was not concerned with the comments of the citizen before him, but rather the way that Mr. Kelly was dressed.
Commissioner Reading stated following Mr. Kelly’s remarks that the way the was Kelly was dressed was disrespectful to the Commission. Kelly, wearing a casual t-shirt and pants, explained to Commissioner Reading that what he had on was his regular, every day attire, and that he didn’t think attire had anything to do with the issues at hand.
Commissioner reading said at last weeks meeting, “You are disrespecting this body by your attire.” He continued, “You are disrespecting this body. You don’t have a shirt with a collar on it. you don’t have shoes with socks.” Mr. Kelly replied, “I don’t think this is a matter of dress. I’m a citizen of this community, and I have been a citizen (of this community) for well, almost 50 years. I’m not some young 20 year old punk coming in here and disrespecting anybody.”At this weeks commission meeting, much to Commissioner Reading’s surprise, there were many people in the audience who were wearing shorts, flip-flops, and t-shirts. Mr. Jeff Kelly was also in attendance. Commissioner Reading, realizing his arrogance, requested speaking privileges, and, after being granted them, issued a formal apology to Mr. Kelly.
“Last week I made a comment to you Mr Kelly, and I think it was taken out of content. But, I am here to offer you an apology.” Commissioner Reading said humbly Monday morning. “I’m old school; brought up in the 50′s right here in Houston County,.
