Discovering Middle-Earth

Our children, soaked through despite their wet weather gear, look at each other, then press on into their own blizzard; this time their steps are just a little more determined, despite their sodden backpacks and squelching boots.We are on day two of New Zealand's spectacular Routeburn Track, which wanders between the Mt Aspiring and Fjordland national parks in NZ's Southern Alps through some of the most inspiring wilderness left on earth.
The walk is universally regarded as one of the 10 best in the world. For three days we will hike hut to hut between the Holyford and Dart valleys, through high mountain peaks and deep mossy valleys and alpine lakes.We (me, my husband,. In the days BC (before children), my husband and I were adventurous travellers. But four children in less than six years had relegated us to family beach holidays spent applying sunscreen and signalling manically on the beach while oblivious kids headed beyond the breakers towards the horizon. But now our children have reached a respectable age for something more ambitious.
We have elected to begin our walk from the divide at the southwest end of the track, closest to Milford Sound, which means two days of gradual climbing and one day of relatively steep downhill walking.
Most hikers catch a bus to the divide, but it is cheaper for our party of seven to catch a taxi ($450 for the one-way, three-hour trip). We are glad we do as our driver, Jeff, obliges us with a guided tour. It is hard to overestimate the effect that the filming The Lord of the Rings has had on this most beautiful part of the world.As well as working on the series (like almost everyone here), Jeff's claim to fame is that he lives next door to the so-called "Gay Orc".. Nowadays,the traditional China wedding dress designed elaborately are favored by many brides. Apparently this neighbour was hired as an extra to be an Orc. However, his difficulty seeing out of his mask meant that his battle-attack run down a hill was a little less co-ordinated and a lot more effeminate than the directors had hoped. He was eventually cut out of the final version but he has cult status in NZ as the Gay Orc. After initial embarrassment he has embraced his fame and is running Gay Orc tours.
