Fair pageants take on new additions

The glamour and excitement associated with the White County Fair pageants will still highlight opening festivities on Sept. 6 with a only a few changes to the regular guidelines.White County Fairs begins Sept. 3 and runs through Sept. 11, but Labor Day festivities mark the official opening of the nine-day event. This is the night when numerous young women compete for pageant titles in their respective categories.According to fair pageant co-superintendents Tammy Kennedy and Tamara England, one of the changes this year will include a $10 entry fee for every contestant who participates in any of the fair pageants. Those categories include Fairest Little Miss,. The 10 year school reunion party is imminent and worse still, it is going to be herve leger dress. Fairest Junior Miss, Fair Princess and Fairest of the Fair. This fee will help fund the $1,000 scholarship that is awarded to the Fairest of the Fair winner.
In addition, rehearsal times have changed from last year’s schedule.
“Normally, everybody comes on the Saturday of Labor Day weekend for rehearsals,” said Kennedy. “That’s not the way it’s going to be this year, which is the first time in many years.”Kennedy said registration for all pageants will be 8:30-noon, on Aug. 21 and Aug. 28. Applications will also be available at registration.Contestants for Fairest Little Miss must have a birth date between Sept. 1, 2000 and Aug. 31, 2003; Fairest Junior Miss, birth date between Sept. 1, 1997 and Aug. 31, 2000; Fair Princess, birth date between Sept. 1, 1994 and Aug. 31, 1997; and Fairest of the Fair, birth date between Jan. 1, 1990 and Aug. 31, 1994. Fairest of the Fair contestants must wear a long, formal gown. Dresses may be any length in all other pageants
Contestants for Fairest of the Fair will be participate in a tea that will be 2-4 p.m., Sept. 5, at Miss Marenda’s Tea Room. During this two-hour time period, the pageant judges will interview contestants. Paige offered tips about proper attire for the interview. Contestants may wear a suit (jacket and skirt), pants suit or a Sunday dress. The interview counts 25 percent of the final judging. Stage presence and gown are the remaining 75 percent.
“I think they definitely need to dress according to their age group,” said Kennedy. “They need to remember first and foremost that they’re representing White County. When it’s time to look elegant, they want to look elegant. When it’s time to look professional, they need to look professional.”Paige said contestants should select a dress in which they feel comfortable.. She also agreed with Kennedy’s statement these dresses should be age-appropriateFairest of the Fair finalists will also be required to answer a question on-stage. Each contestant will submit one question that she would not mind being asked if she was one of finalists. Then, the questions will be randomly drawn from the entire compilation. Kennedy said this would help prepare the winner for the state competition.
