Fr Dias took charge on July 1, 1997, and from day one, he says, he was clear that he wanted to change the reputation of St Xavier’s from being just a “fun, hep and trendy college” to an institution where students from all backgrounds could study.
“I wanted to correct the image because that kept away some good students.” He’s glad the college today has a large number of middle and lower middle class students from conservative backgrounds.

But the disciplinarian has his reasons: “I said no to shorts and sleeveless dresses because students don’t know where to set the limits. The dress should be suitable for an academic institution and respect Indian culture,” he says. “But there’s never been any ban on red colour.”
Even the ban on the prom was necessary, he asserts. “The prom was started in 1983-84 as a send-off for final year students. It was a dignified event for the first eight years, after which it degenerated.
Why should something like this take place in the college?” But his actions did give him an image of a dictator. “A disciplinarian,” Fr Dias corrects.In his tenure, academically too there have been changes with greater emphasis on the honours programme, research and extension services to slums.An avid reader and a sports buff, Dias will finally have some free time next month. “I can catch the World Cup matches,” he smiles.
