Thankfully, we are saved the time travel and see neither, as a hostess draped in a furry stole and smiles, greets and escorts us to our table. But the people we encounter here are just as exclusive; you don’t normally see them partying elsewhere. As DJ Saif says, “I’ve never seen these people partying at any of the other clubs or bars!”
LAP. A nightclub jointly owned and promoted by actor Arjun Rampal and restaurateur AD Singh. The opulent surroundings with customised furniture, bespoke chandeliers and Raja Ravi Varma paintings on walls and lampshades, could well belong to the living room of an erstwhile Maharaja. Think sheer luxury, sink-in sofas, gilt edged furniture and decor, centred around a 500-kilo golden teak chandelier made of more than 2,500 Swarovski crystals!
Walk in at around 11 pm and you may see one table occupied. A little beyond midnight some stragglers dot the bar area. By 2 am the party is in full swing! And a little later, people who started off as prim and proper gentry jump on sofas and tables and swing to the funky house and deep house music that characterises nights here. And this, the ever-smiling hostess Shrishti informs us proudly, is the regular story till dawnbreak on most days.
You will find people greeting each other and cross-conversations happening between two different groups.. Rohit Bal’s corner luxuriates in gold lame upholstery and arrogantly high-backed sofas that block out rest of the room. Tarun goes fishy right near the entrance with decorative fish motifs and scales. Gauri Khan brings in a touch of Bollywood to her set-up with sequinned bronze cushions, a chest of drawers and chandeliers. And then there is the Owners’ table, which stakes a claim by being higher up on a pedestal with larger sofas and a bigger seating arrangement.
