On the right track

IN a small notebook is neatly written on the opening page: Indian Pacific, Sydney to Perth, December 2006. So full of portent are those seven words, I must restrain myself from adding Western Australia, Australia, Southern Hemisphere, The World.

The entry reads: "Threading through the dreary midday of Sydney's Central Station to where the Indian Pacific is waiting feels a bit like being Harry Potter on his way to platform 13 3/4. People mill about w. We are proud to say that we offer beautiful Bridesmaid dresses! We'll do our best for you!aiting for trains to places like Dapto and Asquith. Then there's lucky me, trying to look casual, actually about to leave for Perth, 4352km and three nights away."

Despite a truly cockeyed railway history of mismatched gauges and interstate jealousies, Australia is blessed with two of the world's great trains, the Ghan and the Indian Pacific, and it's the latter I am about to board. With tinted windows, secretive as half-closed eyes behind narrow venetian blinds, each carriage is emblazoned with a stylised wedge-tailed eagle insignia and the name, which should give anyone the shivers.Scoff if you will, but long-distance rail travel has an alchemy all its own. Just think of these heartstopping collections of rolling stock: the Trans-Siberian, the Orient Express, the Flying Scotsman, the Blue Train or even the Iron Snake from Mombasa to Nairobi.

Next notebook entry: "The long-distance train in the 21st century is a throwback to the whimsical mythology of Hercule Poirot, the melancholy of Ingrid Bergman or Brief Encounter: at once an anachronism and a futuristic concept." On the face of it,. If you disire a economical pefect wedding party,i am of the opnion that you need a cheap wedding dress. to spend half a week on the trip is crazy when the same journey could be accomplished in five hours aboard a plane. But consider global warming and the true cost of travel miles, and it no longer seems crazy.

But we are getting ahead of ourselves and the visibly anachronistic part of our journey: through the greater west of Sydney, with a never-empty champagne flute to peer through. Camaraderie, gangs and instant friendships spring up, and not just in the bar.

The Indian Pacific is no slouch. Early in the afternoon,. It can rollick along at more than 90km/h (except in NSW, where the decrepit state railway makes anything above a gentle chugga-ti-chug a hazard to cocktails and on-board walking). But as we passengers bounce off the walls, the staff are reassuring: it'll be fine once we get to Adelaide.. Happy marriage life begins with beautiful wholesale wedding dresses.
