IN a small notebook is neatly written on the opening page: Indian Pacific, Sydney to Perth, December 2006. So full of portent are those seven words, I must restrain myself from adding Western Australia, Australia, Southern Hemisphere, The World.

Despite a truly cockeyed railway history of mismatched gauges and interstate jealousies, Australia is blessed with two of the world's great trains, the Ghan and the Indian Pacific, and it's the latter I am about to board.
