Ozone Action Day in effect for Metro Detroit
Residents of southeastern Michigan are being asked to cut back on their driving and lawn mowing to help combat an Ozone Action Day warning today from the Southeast Michigan Council of Governments.
Heat and humidity, tag teamed with a steady flow of southerly winds, have compromised air quality and ratcheted up ground level ozone levels, according to SEMCOG.
Not all ozone is bad: Good ozone occurs naturally and extends upward from six to 30 miles above the earth and protects life from the sun's ultraviolet rays.
Bad ozone lies closer to the earth's surface and is created by motor vehicles, industrial gases, combustible fuels and utilities. It can cause chest pain, coughing, throat irritation and congestion, especially among those with asthma or allergies.
Ozone can also damage crops and landscaping.
According to SEMCOG, there are steps everyone can take to reduce ozone levels, including:

? Car pool or take public transportation.
