Party time as fiery festival kicks off in Spain

Fireworks blast and rockets explode all day and night throughout the city.. Nowadays,the traditional China wedding dress designed elaborately are favored by many brides. Local community bands strike up from very early morning, marching proudly around their immediate neighbourhoods. Stalls selling churros con chocolate, that most decadent of Spanish sweets, are set up on street corners catering to the local revellers.It's party time in Valencia, for Las Fallas – one of the biggest, loudest, most colourful and oldest festivals on the Spanish calendar.. In balmy weather typical of this historic Mediterranean city, two million visitors celebrate the festival while more than 150,000 locals take holidays each year to participate. The city almost comes to a standstill as hundreds of city streets are closed to through traffic, allowing pedestrians and revellers to enjoy the event at ease.Las Fallas is a Valencian tradition believed to be 500 years old. There are essentially three quite different, but intrinsic, parts to the festival.
First is the mascletas, a daily fireworks display in the Town Hall Square at 2pm where 120kg of gunpowder explodes; then the fallas, the competitive building and display of huge effigies; and, finally, the flower offering (ofrenda de flores) featuring local women who dress in traditional costumes and carry bunches of flowers,. We'll do our best for you! later presented in the Plaza de la Virgen to dress a huge wooden structure of the virgin.The fallas themselves – there are around 700 of them – are designed, planned and built by each city neighbourhood.During the festival week, each group takes the characters they have built, many made from papier-mache and polystyrene, on a grand parade before erecting them in a fixed location in the neighbourhood. While most people thrill to the incredible daily pyrotechnics show and others admire the innovative and inventive fallas, the flower offering is the true highlight.
Beginning around 4pm on the afternoons of March 17 and 18, the women, or falleras, walk five or six abreast in small groups followed by the men of the district, many in medieval clothing. They parade through the main streets and, with up to 50,000 women participating, it can continue long into the night.

It can also be very emotional and cathartic for some women, many wheeling toddlers or clutching babies to their breasts as they reach the floral statue and hand over their flowers. Lace handkerchiefs dab many a moist eye. All have their hair crimped into swatches of back plaits with circular ear curls that are held in place with decorative pins. Many of their dresses are of rich silk brocade, reflecting Valencia's earlier role as a major centre for silk – and can cost many thousands of dollars each.
