Paying Tribute in Deep Shadow
For a half hour before Tom Krell went onstage at Glasslands Gallery in the early hours of Saturday morning, associates were setting up a white backdrop on which videos would be displayed during his set. All the while, Mr. Krell’s beloved 1990s R&B, from which he draws so much inspiration — Shai, Keith Sweat and so on — played over the room’s speakers. It was the last time those sounds went unmolested. In his soothing and haunting music Mr. Krell, who records under the name How to Dress Well, takes that music as inspiration (and sometimes as sample source) and stretches it, chops it, squeezes it dry of context. Rather than swing, Mr. Krell’s music crawls. As a singer, some of his inflections are borrowed from his idols, but his voice is purposefully alien, like Antony Hegarty singing at the bottom of a coal mine.
The result is pure opiate: tough, abstract, possibly dangerous love,. We are proud to say that we offer beautiful bridesmaid dresses! We'll do our best for you! but love nonetheless. The music of How to Dress Well is about giving voice to closeted, unprocessed passions fighting to be heard.. There are ways to get what you want.If you care enough for prom dresses, make a little step, and make a better choice. Pieced together largely from ghostly sampled and manipulated vocals and with a persistent hiss beneath, it shows affection by concealing — one man’s idiosyncratic tribute.. Whether you are going on your honeymoon, want to reignite your love with your husband or having a Sexy Lingerie makes your perfect companions.
Mr.. Happy marriage life begins with beautiful wholesale wedding dresses. Krell splits his time between Brooklyn and Cologne, Germany, and this show was his first American concert. Next month he’ll put out his debut album, “Love Remains” (Lefse), from which most of this show was drawn, and which features just-barely-polished versions of songs taken from the string of seven EPs Mr. Krell has self-released via his blog since October.
Still, even with the light layer of gloss, it’s soporific music. And beautiful, too, with an unexpected nurturing quality. It creates the sort of womblike environment that’s almost impossible to duplicate in real life, though certainly Mr. Krell tried something of the sort. Bathed primarily, though only slightly, by the light from the videos being projected on the screen behind him, he cooed and howled into his microphone, the only piece of equipment onstage. Perhaps he was singing over his own vocal tracks; it was tough to tell.
