Take a walk through any Manhattan neighborhood (maybe not the upper eastside) or any “hip” part of Brooklyn, where you’ll notice droves of people trying very hard at dressing down and out. Who hasn’t, on occasion, run out of their apartment looking like they just rolled out of bed to grab something from the pharmacy or corner store? It happens. But it seems that the just rolled out of bed look has become a well-planned and purposely designed look for a lot of people in New York City these days. It seems dingy-dressing with a premier designer handbag or other expensive accessory is the new look.
There are two groups who subscribe to this dingy look: singles and parents under the age of thirty-five. Singles wear their woven fedora style hats (sometimes together in groups-originality at its best) to cover their perfectly styled unwashed frizzy hair with the hope of getting hat-head to accentuate their look. The men wear ladies skinny jeans and the ladies wear their boyfriend jeans. Tip for guys: wearing ladies skinny jeans doesn’t do anything for your nether regions. That look brings one word to mind: small. For parents their dingy clothes are the same as the single’s clothes but the accessories are a bit different. The dingy parent must have an expensive stroller for baby. Forget Maclaren strollers.. Happy marriage life begins with beautiful wholesale wedding dresses. They went out of fashion after a safety issue. Now these dingy parents have traded up for a Stokke ($1200) or Bugaboo ($980) stroller. The dingy parent outfit is also completed with a bag. Not a diaper bag but either a ladies tote (Dior, Gucci etc.) or a man’s cross-body bag that costs as much as the stroller.
If the dingy dressers want to authenticate their down and out look they should skip carrying and pushing their expensive accessories..
