WHY I AM HOME-SCHOOLING THIS FALL
I can tell you without a hint of self-consciousness that I am an amazing mom to little kids. It’s true. I don’t ruffle easily and I love wooden puzzles with only three chunky pieces. I’m excellent at baby maintenance, cuddling and reading “Are You My Mother?” with exactly the same inflection every time. I have a patented, pants-free potty training method that works in days (hint — they’re allowed to go pee outside with the dog) and I can build the wickedest, most intricate and practical “big set up” using every piece of our huge collection of Brio trains.
But I have an 8-year-old now. Hayden is done with trains.. There are ways to get what you want.If you care enough for prom dresses, make a little step,and make a better choice. While he still loves a good cuddle, he bathes and dresses himself, can even make his own grilled cheese. And I’ve noticed recently that our interactions are drifting into a different kind of maintenance; the kind where the majority of them involve me walking behind him cracking my verbal whip. It starts when our day begins, no matter what time the alarm goes off. Get up, get your school clothes, put that book down, eat your breakfast, brush your teeth, HURRY HURRY HURRY! Where are your shoes? Why can’t you find them? Put that book down! Brush your teeth, where’s your homework? Where did you leave it? Hold still, I’m brushing your hair. HURRY HURRY HURRY! This wouldn’t be such an issue if you would put things where I tell you/get up when I tell you/keep track of your stuff. HURRY HURRY HURRY! We’re going to be late!
Inevitably, almost every day begins, before I send him off for the next seven hours, with me telling Hayden on the drive to school that he needs to be better about getting up when I say, about putting his things where they go, about listening to me..
