He got his first chance in the Alamo Bowl last winter, rushed into service with the Spartans short-handed because of a rash of player suspensions. But Nichol's development as a wideout turned heads in spring practice, and there he was Saturday lining up as a starter for Michigan State.
"He has all the measurables -- the size, the speed, the strength -- to be a guy who can be physical and difficult to bring down," Cousins said of Nichol, one of the Spartans' strongest players and who also boasts a team-best 38-inch vertical leap. "I mean, he expects to be an elite-level receiver. And everything Keith does -- the way he works, the way he prepares -- is to be a leader.. "I knew he didn't have a whole lot of options where to go with the ball," said Nichol, 21, sounding a lot like an old quarterback in the postgame locker room. "I'm glad he trusted in me to go up and make a play."
Cousins does trust him, obviously. Heck, he probably trusts Nichol, who finished with two catches for 32 yards Saturday, as much as anyone in green and white, given their history together.
"That was all him," said Cousins, who spent most of this wind-swept day handing off to his running backs, who piled up nearly 300 yards on the ground. "I didn't even realize the corner was as far over toward Keith as he was, so it was basically 2-on-1 and Keith made the play. You can draw up the Xs and Os, but ultimately it's about the Jims and the Joes. And right there, Keith was just being a great player."
